Sarah put the finishing touches on her makeup and looked in the mirror. The image staring back at her looked effervescent and bright.

Earlier, she and Zach stopped by Colin’s parent’s house. She wanted them to have their son’s dog tags and the engagement ring, which had belonged to Colin’s grandmother. Returning the items felt right.

It was time for her next chapter.

She’d come home after that to get ready for the gala, and Zach went to Gil’s. When the doorbell rang announcing his return, Sarah released a long breath before swinging it open. Zach, handsome and strong, stood on her stoop in a perfectly fitted tuxedo.

Her cheeks heated. “You look amazing.”

“Thank you, but you’re taking my breath away.”

She knew the feeling.

Zach escorted her to the limo, where the rest of their party awaited. Sarah sat pressed to his side, her head on his shoulder. His body warmed her as her friends chatted around them.

“Right, Sarah?” Ashton asked.

She blinked. “Hm?”

Zoe giggled and leaned forward. “Ash told me you lit a fire under him on Wednesday to take me out. Thanks.” She placed a hand on either side of Ashton’s head and drew his face down. They met halfway in a steamy kiss.

Sarah smiled and cast a sideways glance at Zach. He brought her hand to his lips and kissed her knuckles. Her eyes fell to his mouth, wondering what it would feel like to kiss him.

One thing was for sure. She wanted to.

Tonight.

The limo pulled up to The Plex’s conference center. Sarah held tight to Zach’s arm as they followed the players down the red carpet. They maneuvered around the reporters and weaved their way through the partygoers to find the coat check.

Sarah scanned the room. Off to the side, Lanie pored over a tablet. She looked up and smiled as Sarah approached with Zach. “You’re here!” She rushed over to wrap Sarah in a tight hug.

“Zach, this is my best friend, Lanie, and her husband, Matt.”

“It’s so wonderful to finally meet you.” Lanie hugged Zach. “I’m glad you came.”

“Nice to meet you, Zach.” Matt offered his hand, and they exchanged small talk about work and their military experiences.

“Okay, you two, enough chitchat. Go have fun!” Lanie commanded.

“We’ll see you out there.” Sarah took Zach’s arm and led him deeper into the room, where conversations and music mingled. She spied the parquet dance floor as they found their table. “Do you dance?”

“I do.” One dark brow arched up. His low baritone washed over her like a gentle wave, stilling her nerves and radiating that peace she’d come to rely on in his presence.

She set her purse on the table. Sarah couldn’t remember the last time she’d danced, and she didn’t want to waste one moment of this night. “Let’s not wait ‘til after dinner.”

Zach returned a smoldering gaze that caused her to shiver. As tall and built as any of her players, he cut an impressive figure. He took her hand and led her to the center of the dance floor.

Sarah’s pulse kicked up as she relaxed into his embrace.
